John H. Morrison OBE practised at the leading international law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP in Chicago for 37 years before retiring in 1999. He was honoured by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II in 1994 as an Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). He was Chairman of the Oxford University Annual Fund in the United States; President of the Association of American Rhodes Scholars; Co-chairman of the International Bar Association General Professional Programme Committee; and Member of the Council of the IBA Public and Professional Interest Division. He was elected an honorary life member of the International Bar Association (IBA) in 2002.
He obtained a BBA with distinction from the University of New Mexico and a B.A. and M.A. in Jurisprudence from the University of Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar, as well as a Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School.
